Falcon Band Earns Top Ratings At UIL
October 16, 2011 by rdrubio
Congratulations Falcon Band! For the 5th year in a row, you have performed at your highest level and earned the Superior Rating at the UIL Region 11 Marching Contest.
This year’s drill was very complex and at times, your directors wondered just how much of the challenge you could master. Asymmetrical meters are difficult. Asymmetrical meters and phrasing while playing and marching is crazy.
Your work ethic is second to none! I will echo what our principal stated to me a couple of days ago. YOU, Stevens Falcon Band, are the pinnacle of our school! Always make the right choices and you will stay on top. WTG!

For My Friend, Sandy!
April 8, 2011 by rdrubio
This has been an emotional week for staff and students at Stevens High School. The elation of both bands earning the top scores at the UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest was countered with the news that our school secretary had passed away. We all knew this time was coming but that didn’t make the news of her passing any less painful.
At our last rehearsal on Wednesday, I tried very hard to convey how much Mrs. Gomez meant to me and how our selection, “Grant Them Rest” by Gabriel Faure was of particular importance to me. My emotions got the better of me and I was unable to express how I felt. The most I was able to say was “Mrs. Gomez is on her last days with us”. Through their silence and respect, I knew the members of the Stevens Wind Ensemble had made a connection and nothing more needed to be said. Mrs. Gomez passed away a few hours after our rehearsal.
Sandy Gomez was a true fine arts supporter and loved the Stevens Band! This past December, I asked her if she wanted to perform with the band at the Christmas concert. There was no hesitation on her part. She borrowed our piccolo, asked for a copy of the music, practiced, and sat in with the band as our principal, Harold Maldonado conducted “Sleigh Ride”.
Mrs. Gomez taught us many things over the last six years. She was NEVER down on life and she chose to live it to the fullest extent possible. I would swing by her office almost daily when I would go and check my mailbox, and she would sing… Mis–ter Ru-bee-oh! (PP, P8-PP,down to a minor 3rd)…”What’s going on?” I will cherish those memories for a lifetime!
Today, the Stevens Wind Ensemble performed at the UIL contest. I don’t ever make a big deal, in the learning process, about “winning” a trophy. My message to the students is “Make music, and everything else will fall into place”. The band students did just that.
This recording is today’s performance of “Grant Them Rest” from the Requiem, by Gabriel Faure, arranged for band by Barbara Buehlman. Thank you Stevens Wind Ense
